Trim off 2 to 3 inches of the bottom tough asparagus stalks.Note: You can use the asparagus without trimming if you prefer. When the asparagus is bigger/fatter, I like to trim off the bottom and reserve for making vegetable broth. The bottom is usually tough. If you are using thinner asparagus you may not need to trim.
Place the asparagus in a grill basket lined with parchment paper. Alternatively you can place the asparagus in a bowl to season them and then transfer to a grill basket to cook them.
Season the asparagus with the salt, black pepper and sesame oil. Mix to coat with the oil, salt and pepper.Note: You can grill immediately or up to two hours later.
When ready to grill, remove the parchemnt paper from the grill pan and discard. Grill the asparagus 10 to 12 minutes in the grill basket. Keep the grill lid closed. Use a tong to move around the asparagus half way through the grilling time.Note: Cook time will vary depending on the size/thickness of the asparagus. Thinner ones usually cook in 6 to 8 minutes. The grill temperature will also determine how long to cook. You can aslo use a charcoal grill.
The asparagus will be a nice bright green color with some charred look when it is ready.
Turn off the grill. Remove the basket and transfer the asparagus to a serving platter.
Serve with your favorite entree. I like serving this recipe with grilled steaks or chicken.
Notes
You may substitute extra virgin olive oil but the flavor profile will differ. The asparagus will still taste great.
