Homemade Cranberry Gooseberry Sauce

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries
  • 6 ounces fresh gooseberries or frozen gooseberries
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar or dark brown sugar
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon brandy or rum

Instructions

  • In a 3 quart saucepan, add water, orange juice, cranberries, gooseberries, brown sugar and a pinch of salt. Mix to combine. Use medium heat to bring to a boil. Lower the flame to medium low and simmer until the cranberries and gooseberries are mushy.
    Note: Stir the cranberry sauce occasionally to prevent it burning or sticking to the bottom of the pot. This is important, especially as the sauce starts to thicken.

  • Use the back of a wooden spoon or silicone spatula to smash the berries to your desired texture. Once the sauce is thickened to your desired thickness, turn off the flame. Add in the vanilla extract and brandy. Stir to combine.

  • Pour into a sauce serving bowl and serve with your desired poultry or breads.
    Note: The sauce can be cooked and stored in a jar with a tight lid for up to two weeks. Additionally, for a smoother texture, the sauce can be pureed in a mini food processor or blender.
