Get ready to indulge in our easy no-fuss homemade roasted tomato sauce that elevates any amazing meatball recipe, including our savory family-friendly turkey meatball recipe. This culinary delight burst with flavors from a blend of Roma tomatoes, fresh garlic, rosemary and a blend of spices. Moreover, the simplicity lies in tossing all ingredients onto a sheet pan along with the seasonings and roasting in the oven. The roasting cooking technique allows the tomatoes to develop a charred flavor before they are dumped into a blender and pureed to the desired smoothness.

Further, the sauce is then poured into a dutch oven or stock pot for the next leg of the flavor journey. It develops a beautiful red hue and an immensely delightful flavor when simmered on the stovetop. Not to mention, it tastes even better with a red wine addition. This sauce becomes the perfect companion for your meatballs, enriching every bite with its rich, charred tomato goodness.

This easy homemade roasted tomato sauce, sports an amazing versatility. Sometimes, I use it as a simple sauce, once it’s puréed, and serve it with chicken or seafood. Additionally, it’s a perfect base to use for making a Bolognese sauce – simply add milk and simmer until desired texture. One of our favorite ways to use this tomato sauce includes adding our oven roasted turkey meatballs.

In summary, the flavorful simplicity of this sauce enables repetition at our dinner table. That includes using it with the variations mentioned. While you’re at it, try our super delicious turkey meat sauce, which uses bottled marinara sauce elevated to another level of scrumptiousness. Not to mention, the fabulous Roasted Basil Garlic Tomato sauce is also a must try!

Ingredients

Instructions

Preheat Oven 425F/218C degrees

  • Line a half sheet pan with parchment paper. Dump all the ingredients, except the red wine onto the sheet pan .Mix together to coat with the seasonings and olive oil. Transfer to the pre heated oven. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes, until the tomatoes softened and slightly charred around the edges.
15 roma tomatoes, 8 – 10 cloves fresh garlic, 2 medium sprigs fresh rosemary, 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin, 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Remove the sheet pan from the oven. Carefully add the roasted tomatoes into a blender, do this in two batches if needed. Blend into a puree texture.
Note: Be careful not to add two much of the hot tomatoes into the blender.
  • Pour the tomato puree into a 5-quart dutch oven. Add the red wine if using and simmer 20 to 25 minutes until the sauce starts to darken. The sauce is now ready for your favorite meatballs.
Note: I usually add in my baked turkey meatballs and simmer them in the sauce for 10 to 15 minutes to marry the flavors. Enjpy
    1 1/2 – 2 cups red wine
